Virungo is a family of unique camper builds for pick-ups, created based on over 20 years of experience in off-road travels to the farthest corners of the world. Each Virungo unit is made in Poland, on an individual basis, with attention to detail and using the best available components.

All versions share a common DNA: a lightweight aluminum structure, inside-outside architecture, and true off-road capabilities. The different versions respond to the varying expectations of travelers.

Virungo Slip On [in design]

The Virungo unit is installed directly inside the factory cargo box as an easily retractable slip-on module that effectively serves as the pick-up's load. The original box remains on the vehicle, and the living module can be removed at any time, allowing the pick-up to be used for other purposes. This solution does not require any modifications to the vehicle, but it offers less interior space within the Virungo.

Virungo Flat Bed Camper – camper on a flat platform.

The factory cargo box is replaced by a flat-bed platform, on which the living unit is mounted. The independent Virungo camping module can be quickly and easily removed, and the vehicle is ready for other uses.

The flat-bed platform – also available separately – offers clear advantages over a standard pick-up box – a larger and completely flat floor area, foldable and removable sides, additional side storage boxes, and a large drawer at the back. The Flat-bed platform also serves as a base for mounting the dedicated Virungo living capsule.

Virungo XXL – camper for full-size vehicles

The XXL model is based on the same mounting principles but is adapted for larger full-size vehicles such as the RAM 1500/2500, Toyota Tundra, or Ford F-150. In short, bigger can do more. The XXL version offers more space, more features, and higher living comfort while still maintaining a lightweight construction and full off-road capabilities.

Virungo Evo 2 – direct mounting to the frame (OEM Frame Bolt-On)

The factory pick-up truck bed is removed and replaced with a complete Virungo enclosure, mounted directly to the original mounting points on the vehicle's frame. The enclosure uses the same locations as the factory bed, without the need for drilling, welding, or permanent modifications to the vehicle's structure. This type of installation provides the largest living and cargo space.

Custom construction.

Each Virungo is made 100% in Poland, tailored to individual orders with attention to the finest details. The entire design can be aesthetically matched with the vehicle – choosing the color and type of paint, the shade of the tent fabric, and finishing details, as well as configuring the equipment to fully meet the owner's expectations.

Camper equipment.

All equipment elements represent the absolute world top in their areas. We use only the highest quality solutions that ensure stress-free use in the toughest conditions. Like many other elements in Virungo, additional equipment can also be tailored to individual requirements.

External storage compartments.

This is the perfect place for items you want to keep handy, such as ropes, tapes, tools, or other essentials needed during expeditions. The compartments are lockable and waterproof, ensuring that the contents remain safe even in challenging conditions.

Rear bumper.

The steel-aluminum construction integrates lighting, recovery points, and a hitch mount, while the contoured corners protect the bodywork during off-road maneuvers.

Cargo space.

Removing the factory pick-up box has allowed the creation of a large, fully utilized space without loss on the sides and wheel arches. This is why we offer the largest cargo space in its class. In the Virungo, bags, backpacks, and sports equipment fit easily. Everything has its place and remains easily accessible in any situation.

Off-road.

The bodywork does not detract from the pick-up's off-road character. The lightweight construction and low center of gravity do not disrupt the mass distribution. The shape of the bodywork only slightly affects the height and width of the vehicle, and the maintained departure angle allows for confident off-road driving.

Tent.

The raised roof of the Virungo is a construction made with attention to every detail. The triangular (clamshell) shape ensures stability and durability even in the strongest winds. The double-layer covering made from cotton-polyester fabric combines breathability with durability and waterproofing, providing better thermal insulation. Additionally, it features PVC windows, a very dense mosquito net, and a truly royal mattress made of two layers of foam with different hardness, enhancing the sense of comfort.

Winter.

All key systems – water, gas, electricity – are located within the living space, and critical areas are secured and insulated against low temperatures. Large wall surfaces are lined with rubber foam and needled felt, and a double-layer tent provides enhanced insulation. The entire interior is heated by an efficient air heating system.

Innovative construction.

An aluminum, self-supporting structure where each element – shelf, cabinet, bed, or tent frame – also serves a load-bearing function, ensuring very low weight. These interpenetrating solids and planes provide high stiffness and durability while maintaining a low mass.

Dual Use Concept – Inside–Outside.

This is a unique approach to designing expedition structures that combines the functionality of indoor and outdoor spaces into one cohesive system. From the very beginning, we knew we wanted to create a solution that allows for cooking both outdoors and inside the vehicle. During beautiful weather, we can cook and spend time outside, and when the weather turns for the worse, we can quickly take shelter inside and prepare a meal in a comfortable, warm space.

Comfort for the family.

Virungo has been designed with families in mind, providing space for three people. The large upper bed, which serves as the main bedroom, can be lifted to the ceiling during the day, keeping the lower area fully functional. Below is a fold-out sofa (180 × 60 cm), which serves as additional sleeping space, along with a convenient kitchen featuring cabinets, a refrigerator, and a sink. Importantly, even with the upper bed lowered, the lower space can still be used – to prepare coffee, have breakfast, or work.

Development through experience.

The first-generation Virungo vehicle has covered over 30,000 kilometers during testing, taking us from Nord Kapp to the hot sands of Morocco. We tested it in every condition – from torrential rains to scorching heat, on smooth highways and demanding off-road trails. In muddy ruts and on mountain climbs, it proved its off-road prowess. Long highway stretches showcased its good aerodynamics and absence of annoying noise. And the endless African terrains confirmed its rigidity and durability. After a year of intensive use, we knew that Virungo is an excellent solution for a family of 2+1, providing comfort and full functionality, regardless of the weather and road conditions.

Marcin Gerc explains how it differs from traditional solutions and why it can replace a rooftop tent and drawer systems.

VIRUNGO ON TERENWIZJA - WHAT'S CRUNCHING IN THE MUD #52

Virungo is featured on the Terenwizja channel – the most popular source of knowledge about off-roading and 4x4 travel in Poland. In this episode, you will see a detailed presentation of the build and the concept behind it. Marcin Gerc explains why it was worth creating something completely new and how this project performs in the field – from muddy trails to longer trips with family.

The final result is the effect of the passion and masterful craftsmanship of the entire team, which takes care of every detail to ensure that each Virungo unit meets all user expectations. Gorilla Customs is responsible for CAD design and the production of the aluminum capsule. Hangamo provides top-quality tents and mattresses. Meanwhile, Marcin Gerc, the author of the idea and functionality of Virungo, is responsible for the overall project.

MARCIN GERC

CREATOR OF THE VIRUNGO CONCEPT

For twenty years, I have been traveling off the beaten path. Overlanding is my passion and a way to explore the world. Many times I have buried my off-road vehicle in the sands of the Sahara, changed flat tires in the Atlas Mountains, traversed the rainy Kola Peninsula, and crossed the sun-scorched steppes of Kazakhstan. I started with an old Land Rover with an empty trunk, and over the years, I have tested almost every possible configuration of expedition vehicles. From these experiences, Virungo was born.

ADAM AND MICHAŁ

GORILLA CUSTOMS

At Virungo, we are responsible for the entire aluminum structure. We met at the Faculty of Industrial Forms at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, where we were united by a shared passion for design and automotive. From the very beginning, we were fascinated by automotive design – both conceptually and practically. After graduation, we worked together creating off-road structures and campervans, gaining valuable experience in custom projects. In 2018, we founded the brand Gorilla Customs – a place where the passion for creation meets precision in execution. Today, we design and build increasingly advanced off-road constructions.

MARCIN OLESIŃSKI

HANGAMO

for Virungo we are preparing a roof tent and all the textiles.
I have been traveling the world for over thirty years. I have slept in the jungle with tigers, tracked elephants in India, shaken scorpions out of my shoes in the Sahara, and raced kangaroos in the Australian mountains. In my backpack, I always have an analog camera, a few lenses, and a supply of film. In 2017, I founded Hangamo – a workshop whose goal from the start has been to create the best expedition tents in the world.
