Virungois a residential structure that fits any popular pickup truck in Europe. It was created as a result of over 20 years of experience in traveling with off-road vehicles to the farthest corners of the world.
It provides comfortable living conditions for a family with a child, and its unique design allows for convenient use of all functions both inside and outside the vehicle. Thanks to its innovative, self-supporting aluminum construction, it is lightweight and compact, without limiting the vehicle's off-road capabilities. It retains full functionality and mobility, making it ideal for any conditions.
Great designs should live on and serve as many travel and adventure enthusiasts as possible. That's why Virungo is a structure you can order for yourself and your family. You can choose the basic version – which includes only a tent and mattresses – or opt for full equipment, including electrical installation, gas, hot and cold water, and parking heating.
If you have your own ideas for expansion, the structure has been designed for easy customization – it includes conduits and technical openings that facilitate cable routing and the installation of additional equipment.
Virungo is 100% produced in Poland, with attention to the smallest details. You can also match its appearance to your car by choosing the color of the structure and the tent material, so that everything creates a cohesive and aesthetic composition.
This unique approach to designing expedition vehicles combines the functionality of indoor and outdoor spaces into one cohesive system. From the very beginning, we knew we wanted to create a solution that allows for cooking both outdoors and inside the vehicle. When we find ourselves by a lake, in the mountains, or on a forest clearing, we want to cook and spend time outside. But we also know that not every expedition takes place under ideal conditions. Rain, cold, or wind can effectively discourage camping. In those moments, you can retreat inside and prepare a meal in a comfortable, warm space.
Our layout has been designed with families traveling with a child in mind – it ensures comfortable sleep and space for relaxation. The upper bed, measuring 200×130 cm, can be lifted to the ceiling during the day, keeping the lower area fully functional. Below, there is a pull-out sofa (160 × 60 cm) that serves as an additional sleeping space.Importantly, even with the bed lowered, you can still use the lower space – prepare coffee, have breakfast, work, or read a book. This solution provides comfort regardless of the time of day and the needs of the household.
The roof integrated with a clamshell tent is a solution designed for simplicity and user convenience.
Thanks to its design, it sets up quickly and effortlessly, even on your own. The wedge shape ensures the tent is stable and resistant to strong winds.
The fabric is made of a cotton-polyester blend: cotton provides ventilation and natural feel, while polyester enhances durability and moisture resistance. All windows feature three layers – a film, a mosquito net, and waterproof material – allowing for easy adjustment of the interior to weather conditions and desired light levels.
We designed the Virungo with maximum cargo capacity in mind – for families, photographers, athletes, and travelers. Removing the original pick-up box allowed us to create a smooth and functional cargo space without compromising on the sides or wheel arches. This makes it easy to transport large bags, sports equipment, photography gear, and camping accessories.Everything has its place and is easily accessible in any situation.
STORAGE
On both sides of the enclosure, near the wheel arches, there are sealed compartments accessible from the outside. This is the perfect place for items you want to keep handy – ropes, straps, tools, or other essentials for off-road adventures. With these, you don’t have to open the main part of the enclosure when you need something quickly and without unnecessary fuss. The compartments are lockable and waterproof, ensuring the contents remain safe even in tough conditions.
The key assumption was the complete removal of the factory cargo bed of the pick-up. This way, we eliminated unnecessary walls, wheel arches, and partitions that restrict the usable space. Our custom build allows for the full outline of the vehicle to be utilized – a floor area of 180 × 190 cm offers enormousarrangement possibilities. At the same time, the overall structure maintains the unchanged off-road geometry, so the vehicle still performs excellently in demanding terrain.
The Virungo structure is made entirely of aluminum, and its surface is coated with a protective powder paint. This makes the construction resistant to changing temperatures, mud, dust, and moisture – regardless of weather conditions or terrain type. After the expedition, a vacuum cleaner and a damp sponge are all that's needed to quickly restore its cleanliness. Durability and ease of maintenance are among the key advantages of this solution.
The entire structure weighs only 350 kg, and after removing the original box – it is just 200 kg more than the standard version. This result was made possible by using a self-supporting aluminum construction, where every component – from the floor, through the cabinets and roof, to the shelves –
also serves a load-bearing function. This solution allows for maintaining rigidity and durability while not overloading the vehicle. The low weight has a huge impact on driving dynamics and fuel consumption.
The rear bumper serves not only a protective function but also a practical one – it integrates full vehicle lighting and robust mounting points, including a square for the tow hitch in the USA standard. It also features a practical step that facilitates entry into the interior of the enclosure. Moreover, its corners are shaped to protect the side compartments from damage during off-road maneuvers. This solution combines functionality with durability.
The Virunga accommodation is equipped with all necessary installations that ensure full autonomy and the ability to travel comfortably in any conditions.

The Virungo camper has covered over 30,000 kilometers in a year, taking us from Nord Kapp all the way to the hot sands of Morocco. We tested it in every condition – from heavy rains to scorching heat, on smooth highways and demanding off-road trails. In muddy ruts and steep mountain climbs, it proved its off-road capability, while on bumpy roads – its durability and watertightness.
Long stretches of highway showcased its excellent aerodynamics and lack of annoying noise, significantly enhancing travel comfort. After nearly a year of use, we know one thing – this camper is a great solution for a family of 2+1, providing comfort and full functionality, regardless of the weather or road conditions.
Marcin Łobodziński from the Land Cruiser Adventure Club talks to Marcin Gerc about the concept of a lightweight, self-supporting expedition build. In the video, you will learn about the project's assumptions, see the interior, and find out what makes Virungo one of the best solutions in the world.
Irek Rek from the Bluephoto-PL channel examines a structure that one can truly live in. Lightweight, compact, and fully functional – it performs well even in challenging terrain. Marcin Gerc explains how it differs from traditional solutions and why it can replace a rooftop tent and drawer systems.
Virungo is featured on the Terenwizja channel – the most popular source of knowledge about off-roading and 4x4 travel in Poland. In this episode, you will see a detailed presentation of the build and the concept behind it. Marcin Gerc explains why it was worth creating something completely new and how this project performs in the field – from muddy trails to longer family trips.
The final result is a product of the passion and masterful craftsmanship of the entire team, which pays attention to every detail to ensure that each Virungo unit meets all user expectations. Gorilla Customs is responsible for CAD design and the production of the aluminum capsule. Hangamo supplies top-quality tents and mattresses. Meanwhile, Marcin Gerc, the creator of the idea and functionality of Virungo, oversees the entire project.
"For twenty years, I have been traveling off the beaten path. Overlanding is my greatest passion and a way to explore the world. I have buried my off-roader in the sands of the Sahara and the mud of the Carpathians many times, changed flat tires in the Atlas Mountains and the Balkans, traversed the rainy Kola Peninsula, and the sunburned steppes of Kazakhstan. I started with an old Land Rover with an empty trunk, and over the years, I have tested nearly all possible configurations of expedition vehicles – rooftop tents, drawer systems, kitchens, showers, heating, and electrical installations.""From these experiences arose the need to create the ideal build – one that combines practicality, comfort, and reliability. This is how Virungo was born."
We met at the Department of Industrial Forms at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, where a shared passion for design and automotive brought us together. From the very beginning, we were fascinated by automotive design – both conceptually and practically. After our studies, we worked together on creating off-road builds and camper vans, gaining valuable experience in tailor-made projects. In 2018, we founded the brand Gorilla Customs – a place where the passion for creation meets precision in execution. Today, we design and build increasingly advanced off-road structures. At Virungo, we are responsible for the entire aluminum build – from the first sketch to the last screw.
I have been traveling the world for over thirty years. I have slept in jungles with tigers, tracked elephants in India, shaken scorpions out of my shoes in the Sahara, and raced kangaroos in the Australian mountains. Although I always take only what is necessary, my backpack is not without an analog camera, a few lenses, and a supply of films. In 2017, I founded Hangamo – a workshop that has aimed from the start to create the best expedition tents in the world. Our products have proven themselves in extreme conditions on all continents.
For Virungo, we prepared a rooftop tent and all the textiles – designed without compromise, with the intention of expeditions in any conditions.
